The problems of water sanitation

Emptying the bath, flushing the toilet or pouring the dishwater down the sink: they might seem like harmless everyday actions. But for most people in France, these simple acts trigger a whole process in the water cycle: sanitation.

The water sanitation network encompasses the collection and treatment of waste water. In real terms, it joins together the pipes and water treatment plants in which the waste water is processed before being released into the natural environment. The water coming into the treatment plants is at the very least dirty, and may also be polluted. The waste water network uses a whole host of systems. It is closely monitored and subject to strict regulatory restrictions to minimise the impact of polluted water on natural bodies of water – and the species that live in them – at the end of the water cycle.
