Drinking water in condominium buildings

Almost 30% of French homes are condominium apartments. Apartment blocks are supplied with water and electricity through a single branch line. The network operator can then decide whether to share the bills between the occupants based on floor-area calculations, or by measuring the volumes actually consumed by each apartment – this is known as submetering. Submetering is a fairer approach to billing because it is more representative of individual lifestyles. It may also make people more accountable for their water use and less prone to wastage. In practice, when the volume of water consumed by each home is known, the householders can take steps to limit their use of water for drinking, washing and heating, thus reducing their environmental footprint.
